I left the restaurant but I was under the impression the reason I was not welcomed was far beyond their reaction since I was not talking loud or disturbing anyone, I was merely taking a number I needed. I asked them for a pen and then I asked is there a problem? and they pushed a menu towards my hand and said take this to go as I was still talking on the phone, I asked them what you want me to leave? They stated they don't care if I left, I've never felt so un-welcomed in my own borough. I was standing by the bar/counter and my phone rang and I had to take a very important call and she came over and was looking at me as if I had done something wrong and started to talk to me while I was on the phone, I needed to make a quick notation at the counter/bar. Every few minutes she would circle me and asked if I was going to order but I got the impression they were uncomfortable with my presence because they kept staring at my hands and bags, I just finished shopping on Arthur Avenue. Customers are paying top dollar to be treated with respect and served great food not have to be exposed to riff raff. The way I look at it people should not be discussing their private business in a place of work, is rude and it brings bad business practices, who knows why would she be discussing personal issues in front of the customers. I walked in and I requested a menu, the woman who serves, was in a personal conversation with the other waitress about her boyfriend and how he left her for a much younger and thinner woman yada yada yada. I can't really comment on the food since I didn't get an opportunity to order: I support each and every restaurant on Arthur Avenue and I wanted to try their food. For dessert, we shared Italian Cheesecake and we both had double espressos. My husband then had "Veal a Limone" which he said was the best veal he had ever eaten, melts in your mouth, and I had the Chicken Scarpariello on the bone. We shared a lasagna as an appetizer (if you can believe) it was totally delicious with fresh homemade pasta and a bolognese sauce. The rest.what can I say other than I felt like I was back in my mother's kitchen with wonderful food and generous portions. There is also a blackboard with menu specials of the day so you don't have to memorize them. We were seated and given menus immediately. for a late lunch, and were greeted very warmly by a gentlemen and a nice woman who I think was family. About 10 tables, red and white checked tablecloths, owner there on premises doing the cooking. This restaurant is so unpretentious, that unless you are looking for it, you would not notice it at all. We live in Westchester so it is only a 25 minute drive to the Bronx for us. The free samples might lure you in, but the variety of pasta, cooked and cured meats, and more will fill your table and keep you coming back.We called the restaurant 1/2 hr. Calandra's Cheese also makes gift boxes to order-a perfect, unique, customizable gift for anyone who appreciates true New York, Italian food, or just simply great cheese. Calandra's makes their ricotta and mozzarella fresh daily, and stocks every Italian deli essential in the most authentic way possible. Calandra's burrata is out of this world, and a relative bargain.
